2 May 2024 | CULTURAL AGENDA
If you’re wondering about things to do in San Sebastian during your stay, from May 9 to 12, you can’t miss the Pasaia Itsas Festibala, an event that celebrates the maritime history of Pasaia and has crossed borders with its success.
The port of Pasaia has a long and fascinating history. Since the Middle Ages, it has been a vital center for maritime and commercial activities. During the 16th and 17th centuries, the port mainly focused on shipbuilding for the Crown and for the whaling and cod fisheries in Newfoundland. In the 1960s and 1970s, Pasajes was a port of great importance for cod fishing. Today, although the fishing fleet has drastically decreased, the port remains an essential element in the identity of Pasaia.
The Pasaia Itsas Festibala is a meeting of traditional vessels that takes place every two years. This maritime festival is the most important international cultural event on the Basque Coast. During the festival, visitors have the opportunity to enjoy the great maritime-cultural heritage of Pasaia.
This year, visitors will have the opportunity to visit and sail on emblematic boats such as the tuna boat Le Biche and the schooner La Recouvrance. These ships offer a unique view of the maritime heritage and are an integral part of the Pasaia Itsas Festibala experience.
The Pasaia Itsas Festibala program consists of various activities linked to maritime heritage and culture. Visitors can enjoy music, dance, exhibitions, gastronomy, and the display of traditional trades. The complete festival program can be found on its official website or by clicking here.
