The Semana Grande (Big Week) of Donostia - San Sebastián in 2024, known to the locals as Aste Nagusia, will take place from August 10th to 17th. It promises to be a week filled with culture and tradition. Since 2003, every year, 4,000 pirates participate in one of the most entertaining events of this week: Abordaia.
It’s undoubtedly San Sebastián’s most famous pirate act. Thousands of young people take the bay armed with water guns and makeshift masts.
The day consists mainly of constructing a raft for a pirate boarding and conquering La Concha Beach. The organization provides inflatable bags each year, and then each “kuadrilla” must ingeniously create a stable vessel to board and conquer other boats using water guns.
One of the most anticipated moments during the Semana Grande is the Donostia fireworks display. Every night throughout the week, an impressive international fireworks competition takes place. The Playa de la Concha and its surroundings come alive with locals and visitors enjoying the pyrotechnic show in a magical atmosphere.
