Morning: cultural immersion in the center of Oñate
09:00 h: We start our route at the Oñati Tourist Office (Plaza de los Fueros, 1), where we can acquire detailed information about the town and hire guided tours (+34 943 78 34 53) to delve into its history and culture.
09:30 h: Our first destination is the Sanctuary of Arantzazu, a religious and architectural icon of the Basque Country. This masterpiece, located in an impressive natural environment, will surprise you with its avant-garde facade designed by Eduardo Chillida and Jorge Oteiza, among others.
11:00 h: Moving to the historic center of Oñati, we find the Sancti Spiritus University, a Renaissance jewel that was the first Basque university. Its impressive library and its cloister deserve a detailed visit.
12:00 h: We continue our walk through the old town admiring the Gothic Church of San Miguel Arcángel, with its majestic portico and its interior full of artistic treasures.
13:00 h: To finish the morning, nothing better than tasting a pintxo or a traditional Basque dish in one of the bars or restaurants in the old town. Oñati offers a wide variety of gastronomic options for all tastes, although we recommend you to visit the restaurant of the Torre Zumeltzegi, an imposing medieval tower-house from the 13th-14th century.
Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park
Afternoon: between nature and adventure
14:30 h: In the afternoon, we head to the Aizkorri-Aratz Natural Park, a paradise for hiking lovers. In this incomparable natural environment, we can carry out different hiking routes and enjoy the impressive peak of Aitxuri, the highest in Gipuzkoa.
16:00 h: If you fancy a speleological adventure, you can enter the Oñati-Arrikrutz Caves, a system of underground galleries that houses a geological, archaeological and paleontological treasure of great value.
